Ernest Knowles died on Friday 15th September 1916, aged 19 years, and was remembered on the THIEPVAL MEMORIAL, Somme, France.
He was born c1897 at Nuncargate, Kirkby, to parents George and Sarah Knowles. George Knowles was a Hardware Dealer, and a native of Sheffield, who married Sarah Ann Wharmby at Kirkby in June 1892.
His brother Hayden Knowles is also remembered on Kirkby's War Memorial.
