The site for Sutton's cemetery was purchased in 1885, at a cost of £1,700, and was located next to St Mary's Churchyard. The cemetery was opened on 24th May 1892, and the first person to be interred was Mr John Dove, a Framework Knitter, who was buried on 30th May 1892.

The cemetery also included a mortuary chapel, which stood behind the site of the war memorial. However the chapel fell into disuse, and it was ordered to be demolished by Sutton Council in March 1961.

The War Memorial was erected in October 1921, and was officially unveiled by Mr John Dove (87), a Crimean War Veteran. It was dedicated during an ecumenical service. The War Memorial is now preserved as a Grade II listed structure of Special Historic Interest.

A project to record further details about the servicemen named on the War Memorial can be found on the

The Cemetery is now run and maintained by Ashfield District Council, and the burial records are kept by the Leisure and Recreation Department at the District Council Offices, Urban Road, Kirkby-in-Ashfield, Notts, NG17 8DA.

An indexed copy of the burial registers is also held at Sutton-in-Ashfield library. The copy, which covers the years 1892-1945, is in eleven volumes, and is indexed alphabetically within each volume.

Some of the burial plots were bought outright by the families, so that they had "exclusive right of burial". A copy of the certificate issued to my Great Grandmother after she purchased her family burial space can be viewed here.

A collection of a small number of gravestones can now be seen on the Monumental Inscriptions page.bluearrow_right.GIF (634 bytes)
