Samuel Berry died on Monday 26 August 1918, Age 24, and was buried in the FOUQUIERES CHURCHYARD EXTENSION, Pas de Calais, France.

He was born c1893 at Sutton-in-Ashfield, Notts, to parents Samuel and Sarah Berry. Samuel Berry was a Coal Miner, and a native of Arnold, who married Sarah Cook at St Mary, Sutton-in-Ashfield, in June 1893. The family moved back from Arnold to Sutton-in-Ashfield just before 1900, and later resided at 18 Forest Street, Sutton-in-Ashfield, Notts.

Samuel was the elder brother of George Berry, who is also commemorated on the War Memorial. Samuel Berry was engaged to be married.

Berry - In Loving Memory of our dearly beloved Sons, Private Samuel Berry, of the 1/8th Sherwood Foresters, killed in Action, August 26th 1918, aged 23 years; Also Private George Berry, of the 7th Leicesters, killed in Action in the year 1915, aged 18 years. Dear Sons, not "Good-bye", but "Good-night", We shall all meet in the morning light - From loving Father, Mother, Brothers and Sisters; also Sam's fiancee, Chrissie.
