William Henry Edward Butterworth died on Saturday 1st July 1916, aged 26, and was buried in BLIGHTY VALLEY CEMETERY, AUTHUILE WOOD, Somme, France. He died on the first day of the Battle of the Somme, and was one of ten local men killed on the same day.
He was buried in the same cemetery as another local casualty, George L. Barnett, from Skegby, who also died on the same day.
He was born on 17th November 1890, on Union Street, to parents Harry and Mary Elizabeth Butterworth. Henry Butterworth was a Farm Labourer, who married Mary Limb at St Mary, Sutton, in May 1888. At the time of the 1901 census the family were living at 18 Bowers Yard, Sutton-in-Ashfield, Notts.

Mrs Butterworth, of 8 Bishop Street, Sutton, has received official intimation of the death of her husband, Private Wm. Henry Edward Butterworth, who has been reported as missing since July last. The deceased soldier was 26 years of age, and worked at the B Winning Colliery previous to enlisting in the Sherwood Foresters. (Photo - see above)
