Percy Caunt died on 1st July 1916, aged 25 years, and was remembered on the THIEPVAL MEMORIAL, Somme, France. He died on the first day of the Battle of the Somme, and was one of ten local men killed on the same day.
He was baptised at St Andrew's Church, Skegby on 6th April 1892, and was the son of Henry Caunt and Emily (formerly Smith) who married at Skegby in February 1888. At the time of Percy's death they were living at 34 Vere Avenue, Stoneyford Lane, Sutton-in-Ashfield, Notts.
Percy Caunt is also listed on the Skegby and Stanton Hill War Memorials. Cecil Caunt, a younger brother of Percy Caunt also died in the war, and is also remembered on the Sutton-in-Ashfield War Memorial.

Caunt, Private Cecil, Sherwood Foresters, 34 Vere Avenue, Stoneyford Road, who was killed on August 30th last at the age of 21 years. His only brother, Private Percy Caunt, also of the Sherwood Foresters, was killed on July 1st 1916.
