Sampson Cotton died on Wednesday 25th December 1918, aged 21 years, and was buried in the TOURLAVILLE COMMUNAL CEMETERY AND EXTENSION, Manche, France. He died on his way home from France from influenza and pneumonia.

He was born c1897 at Walsall Wood, Staffs, to parents William and Mary Cotton. William Cotton was a Coal Miner, and a native of Walsall, who was living with his family in Walsall Wood at the time of the 1901 census. However, at the time of Sampson's death the family resided at 27 Unwin Road, Sutton-in-Ashfield, Notts.
