He was born c1893 in Sutton-in-Ashfield to parents Samuel & Harriet Denby. Samuel Denby sr. was a Frame Work Knitter, and a native of Sutton-in-Ashfield. At the time of the 1901 census the family were living at 21 Forest Street, Sutton-in-Ashfield.
