GREGORY F.
Frank Gregory
Private 39491
7th Bn., North Staffordshire Regiment
Frank Gregory died on Sunday 15 April 1917, age 29, and was remembered on the CHATBY MEMORIAL, Egypt.
This memorial commemorates almost 1,000 Commonwealth servicemen who died during the First World War and have no other grave but the sea. Many of them were lost when hospital ships or transports were sunk in the Mediterranean, sailing to or from Alexandria. Others died of wounds or sickness while aboard such vessels and were buried at sea.
Cameronia (Anchor Line) 1911-1917
Frank Gregory was probably travelling on the Cameronia, which was carrying 2650 reinforcement troops from Marseilles to Alexandria when she was torpedoed on the 15th April 1917 by the U-33 just east of Malta, and sank in 40 minutes. 129 troops and 11 crew members were lost. Among them were Leonard Riley and Harry Turner, who are also remembered on Sutton's War Memorial.
Frank Gregory was born on the 12th February 1888 at Brook Street, Sutton, to parents George & Hannah Gregory. George Gregory was a Framework Knitter, and later a Colliery Banksman, and in 1901 the family were living at 11 Crown Street, Sutton.
