James William Herring died on Thursday 16 August 1917, Age 28, and is commemorated on the TYNE COT MEMORIAL, Zonnebeke, West-Vlaanderen, Belgium.

He was born on 8th April 1889 at Skegby, Notts, and was baptised at St Peter's church Mansfield in August 1889. He was the son of John James & Mary Ann Herring. John James Herring was a miner, who married Mary Ann Hayes at Sutton-in-Ashfield in December 1888.

James William Herring was the husband of Sarah Ann Herring, (later Smith). He was the elder brother of Fred Herring, and the brother-in-law of Samuel Sills, who are also remembered on the War Memorial.
