H.M.S. Cressy

The "Cressy" was an armoured cruiser, which was hit by a torpedo from the German U-Boat U-9. The ship had stopped to rescue survivors from two other warships in its patrol - the "Aboukir" and "Hogue" - and in doing so left itself open to attack. The ship was hit by two torpedos from the U-Boat, and sunk within fifteen minutes. A full description of the attack can be read at http://www.worldwar1.co.uk/cressy.htm .

Ernest Hinton was born c1896, and is described as a native of Sutton-in-Ashfield, Notts. He was the son of Edwin George and Miriam Hinton, whose address at his death was 46 Coxmoor Road, Sutton-in-Ashfield. Edwin George Hinton died in November 1918, and the rest of the family moved to Stone Row, Street Lane, Gildersome, Leeds, sometime after his death.
