Matthew Henry Knowles died on Sunday 3 September 1916, aged 33 years, and is commemorated on the KNIGHTSBRIDGE CEMETERY, MESNIL-MARTINSART, Somme, France.

He was born on 26th May 1883, at Smedley's End, Sutton-in-Ashfield. He was the son of James & Fanny Knowles. James Knowles was a Miner, and a native of Walton, Derbyshire. Fanny Knowles was originally from Codnor Park. In 1901 the family were living in Sutton-in-Ashfield.
