According to the Commonwealth War Graves website, John Pickard was awarded the Albert Medal, which was a medal given for saving life.

The back of the medal shows the words "For Gallantry in saving life on Land".

  I am hoping to find more about the date and reason for this award as research progresses.

Pickard - Sacred to the memory of our dear son and brother, Spr. John Pickard R. E., who died in Wimereaux Hospital, France, December 25th 1916.
He will not grow old, as we are that are left grow old,
Age will not weary him, or the years condemn;
At the going down of the sun, and in the morning,
We will remember him.
From his loving Mother and Father, Sister and Brothers.
