John William Roper died on Friday 23 November 1917, Age 23, and commemorated on the TYNE COT MEMORIAL, Zonnebeke, West-Vlaanderen, Belgium.

He was born at Forest Side, Sutton on 22nd May 1894, to parents John Henry Roper and Elizabeth Ann (formerly Naylor). He was their eldest son.

Roper - In loving memory of our dear son and brother, Private J. W. Roper, 1st Sherwood Foresters, who was killed in action, in Belgium, on November 23rd 1917, aged 23 years. He bade no one his last farewell, He waved his hand to none; His spirit fled before we knew, That from us he had gone. - From his loving Mother, Father and family, and Fiancee Hilda.
