John William Scothern died on Saturday 1st July 1916, and is commemorated on the THIEPVAL MEMORIAL, Somme, France. He died on the first day of the Battle of the Somme, and was one of ten local men killed on the same day.
He was born c1894 at Sutton-in-Ashfield, the son of Samuel Scothern. Samuel Scothern was a Bricklayers Labourer and a widower by the 1901 census, when the family were living at Bower's Yard, Sutton.
