Samuel Shaw died in hospital on Thursday 14th January 1915, Age 24, and was buried in Sutton-in-Ashfield Cemetery on 17 January 1915.(Grave Ref AM1652.)

He was born c1890 at Sutton-in-Ashfield, and was the eldest known son of John and Sarah Ann Shaw. John Shaw was a Coalminer, and a native of Pinxton, Derbys. At the time of Samuel's death the family were living at 7 Brook Street, Sutton-in-Ashfield.

In loving memory of our dear son, Lance-Corporal Samuel Shaw, Grenadier Guards, son of J. Shaw of Brook Street, Sutton, who was wounded at Soissons, September 16th 1914, died January 14th 1915. One of the bravest, one of the best, while doing his duty, was called to rest.
