Walter Singleton died on Friday 11th August 1916, Age 28, and was commemorated at KNIGHTSBRIDGE CEMETERY, MESNIL-MARTINSART, Somme, France.
He was born on 11th December 1889, and was the son of Samuel Singleton & Maria (formerly Kent) of Kirkby Lane, Sutton. His father was a Hosiery Framework Knitter, who originally came from Radford, near Nottingham. His mother was a native of Ashover, Derbyshire. His parents married at Radford in May 1877.
He was also the husband of Lylie Singleton, of 8 Brown Street, Hyson Green, Nottingham. They had only recently married, and the picture printed above was taken from his wedding photograph, which had been found on his body. The photograph had been badly damaged by the shell which killed him, but the faces in the photograph remained intact.
