Joseph Staley died on Friday 14th July 1916, Age 23, and is remembered on the THIEPVAL MEMORIAL, Somme, France.

He was born c1893 at Newhall, Derbyshire, the son of Levi and Mary Hannah Staley. Levi Staley was a Coal Miner, who married Mary Hannah Sparrow in December quarter 1886. On the 1901 census the family were living at High Street, Newhall, but by the time of Joseph's death they resided at 31 Tudor Street, Sutton-in-Ashfield, Notts.

His elder brother, Daniel Staley, is also listed on the War Memorial.
