Private G. I. Taylor
The news of the death of still another
miner-soldier has to be recorded in the person of Private George Isaac Taylor,
whose home was at Aked's-yard, Mill-street, Sutton. The deceased, who was 20
years of age, formerly worked at the New Hucknall Colliery. He enlisted in
November 1915, in the King's Royal Rifles, and was subsequently transferred to
the machine gun section. His death took place on June 27th.
The following letter has been received by his sister from the
officer in charge of his Company:
"I have been trying to get a letter off to you since your brother - Private
G. I. Taylor - was killed in action in the trenches on June 26th last, and the
opportunity has only just presented itself. We were in the trenches for some
little time after his death, and when we were relieved we were kept on the move
continuously until now, when we are likely to go back into the trenches at any
time, although in quite a different part.
Please accept my very deep sympathy and also that of all the
officers and men of this Company in the very cruel loss you have sustained, and
for which no words of mine can ever compensate you. Your brother had been in my
section since the middle of April, when he was transferred from a Depot Co., and
I had got to know him well and found him very willing and very good at his work,
and his loss to me was a very severe one, and not only to me but also to the
other men in the section, who found him so cheery at all times.
If I am spared until the termination of the war, I shall hope to
get up and see you, and let you know any further particulars that I am able
to.Wherever it is in any way possible, memorial crosses with full particulars,
are being erected over the graves."
