[ From History of Sutton-in-Ashfield, published by L. Lindley 1907]
Sutton-in-Ashfield, like many other towns, had a good number of Inns and Public Houses; not to mention its numerous Beerhouses and Off Licences (shops selling alcohol for consumption off the premises). In 1888, when they were considering the re-licencing of the 'Red, White & Blue' in its much enlarged new building, it was pointed out that there were "Twenty-three licenced houses being found within a radius of 200 yards". However, this did not stop the magistrates from altering the licence in any way!
Many of the establishments I have recorded, from various sources, no longer exist due to extensive 'town improvements'; particularly the clearance of the Town Centre in 1905 and during the 1960's. However, I have reproduced a basic Map of Sutton-in-Ashfield prior to the redevelopment which shows the positions of the town centre pubs.
As well as the properties listed on this website, I am also aware of another Public House (or Beer-off) which stood on New Street, where a Mr Bridgett once lived. There is also a note of a public house in the vicinity of Mr Stendalls home on Forest Street (now Station Road, near the old farmhouse on Mable Avenue). I have not yet been able to identify these premises from any other source.
If you believe that one of your ancestors was connected with an Inn, Public House, or other licenced premises in Sutton-in-Ashfield please feel free to contact me. I have a growing database of people connected with licenced properties in Sutton-in-Ashfield, which has been collected from various sources. An index of those people are listed below.
