This property was located on Swine Green (or Engine Green) which later became known as Portland Square.
The New Inn is probably the second oldest Inn, dating from the 18th century. A popular rhyme was "Swing your leg round my dear, Mrs. Allcock sells beer" which referred to the potency of her brew.
The above photograph was found in my grandparents photograph collection, and is dated 1949 on the reverse. The New Inn is not listed in the 1941 directory.
The New Inn was demolished in 1966 and replaced with shops.
