Red, White & Blue

Located on the corner of High Street and Market Place, it was the oldest building on the street; thought to have been built at the time of King James II. In the above picture, the Red White and Blue is the centre-right building with one of its doors standing open.

Samuel Shephard was living in the property as early as 1847 but was first listed as a Beer Retailer in 1855 and a Beerhouse Keeper in 1864.

In 1888, George Shaw replaced the old building with a new one, which was set back 15 feet - at the request of the Local Board - to double the width of the road leading to the Market Place. At the time that the rebuilding was being discussed it was recorded that George Shaw had occupied the property as tenant for the previous ten years, and his uncle, Samuel Sheppard, had occupied the property for the thirty years before that.

1888 was also the first time that the property was given the name of The Red, White & Blue.

The building was demolished in 1965.
