This property is located close to the corner of High Pavement and what was Crown Street, but is now The Twitchell.
It is first listed as a beerhouse in 1874 directory. On the 1881 census Edward Thorpe is living on High Pavement, but is listed as a Miner, with no mention of a licenced trade - although he could have been running the beerhouse at that time.
The Shakespear was mentioned in the History of Sutton (1907), as it was adjacent to a Fire Box (Fire-fighting equipment). Known locally as the 'Shakey'.
In 1922 and 1928 it was an unnamed Beer Retailer trading from 37 High Pavement, but by 1941 the Shakespear name had been reintroduced in the directories.
The Shakespear is still trading, although the building may have been replaced at some time.
