This property is located on what was the Upper Green and now known as Devonshire Square.
The White Swan, or Swan Inn as it was sometimes known was the oldest Inn in Sutton, dating from the 16th century. There is a reference to the Swan in 1578 when three Sutton Parishoners appeared at the Archdecons court for "Drinking Ale during the time of Divine Service". The first stone building was constructed during Elizabethan times, and an additional room had to be created later by tunnelling under what was then Swan Street. At one time it had stabling for thirty horses.
In 1628 the Dutchess of Devonshire stopped at the White Swan for refreshment after attending the service at St Mary's. A later building, Georgian in date, survived until 1934.
In 1838 it was the departure point for The Sherwood Forester Van to Nottingham, on Monday, Wednesday and Saturdays.
The building was rebuilt in 1934, as a much smaller property, and it still open today.
